Fine rugs are normally woven by traditional methods using fine materials that will mitigate against aging & wear. Many of the rugs we clean are over a hundred years old. Hand woven rugs are usually made natural wool, this will contain natural oils that resist wear & dirt.
However, there are things you can do to help your rug retain a healthy condition. Regular vacuuming of the rug, top and less frequently the back, as well as the parts caught under furniture (bugs like to hide here!) will help.
If your rug is going into storage have it treated with an insecticide to prevent moth damage. (we offer this service)
If you spill something onto the rug never use chemical carpet cleaning powders or liquids. These often contain bleaches, that can damage the pile and colour of your rug.
Mop up any excess liquids by gentle dabing with and soft spongel. Never use a rubbing action, just dab and blot rather just press down & then lift off to soak up liquid.
If the spillage is slightly thicker, i.e. gravy; after doing the above you can use a very faintly damp cloth & work round the stain from the outside , gently dabing & lifting away. *NEVER USE HOT WATER*
